SUMMARY:The De-Socialization of Electricity: Unbundling the Public Utility Model in the United States - with Matt Huber
DESCRIPTION:The event will be in English. \nThe description is taken from the event’s website: \n“One of Marx’s key arguments in Capital is that capital lays the material conditions for socialism through the socialization of production (harnessing the cooperative powers of the collective workers and the social powers of science and technology). But he probably did not foresee the capacity of capital to arrest this process by breaking apart heavily socialized production systems – that is\, de-socialization. Electricity represents socialized production par excellence – a physical grid infrastructure requiring socialized investment and central planning by its very nature. In the early 20th century United States\, electricity was partially socialized through ‘progressive era’ public utility law and policy. Yet\, starting in the 1970s\, this model was demolished in favor of competition and markets – increasingly fragmenting grid governance into a dispersed and overlapping set of byzantine institutions. Where does this leave socialist electricity politics today (particularly in relation to the climate crisis and the centrality of electricity decarbonization)? I suggest the first step must be re-socialization. \nPart of the Socialization in Theory and Practice research project led by Rabea Berfelde and Jacob Blumenfeld\, funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.”

SUMMARY:The Great Transition: Reviving post-capitalist solidarities in Montréal
DESCRIPTION:The world is burning. Forest fires\, droughts\, and floods are multiplying across the globe. The Israeli state is massacring the Palestinian population with the complicity of Western powers\, putting the region at risk. Inequalities are on the rise all over the planet. People are being evicted from their homes\, and others are struggling to pay the rent\, while landlords are getting richer. Grocery is becoming ever more expensive\, while large food retailers are making record profits. Migrants drown crossing the Rio Grande and the Mediterranean\, while their brothers and sisters are exploited and underpaid in the fields\, warehouses\, and hospitals of the Global North. \nIt’s becoming increasingly urgent to implement radical left solutions: socialize the means of production; create worker and consumer cooperatives; de-asphalt and revitalize our living environments; develop non-market housing; decentralize power; collectively share care work; demilitarize our societies. These measures are the bare minimum to create the conditions of a decent life for all. There is an undeniable need to dismantle capitalism\, patriarchy\, and colonialism. \nYou can get the full schedule here: https://thegreattransition.net/schedule/

SUMMARY:A conference on planning\, degrowth and social reproduction in Paris and online
DESCRIPTION:Paul Guillibert\, Frédéric Monferrand\, Alexis Cukier\, Davide Gallo Lassere are organizing an event in French entitled Planning\, degrowth\, and social reproduction: the political relevance of ecomarxism. The event can be joined on May 20\, 2025\, in Paris-I Panthéon-Sorbonne or online via this link. \nThe hypothesis underlying this event is that eco-Marxism is currently entering a new phase in its history. Henceforth\, it is not only ecological catastrophes\, but also the political means of averting them that occupy attention. In other words\, it is no longer only the theoretical critique of capitalism\, but also the strategic perspectives once explored by Marxism that are now seeking renewal. In this respect\, we see three major proposals taking shape\, representing three ways of imagining a democratization of socio-economic life in the age of the Anthropocene: ecosocialist planning\, degrowth\, and the invention of autonomous\, localized forms of eco-social reproduction. This event aims to explore and compare these three proposals. \nFull schedule and details here: https://isjps.pantheonsorbonne.fr/evenements/planification-decroissance-reproduction-actualite-politique-lecomarxisme

SUMMARY:INDEP online Talk - Rethinking Expertise in Democratic Economic Planning - with Ellen D. Russell and Simon Tremblay-Pepin
DESCRIPTION:One of the main goals of postcapitalist democratic economic planning (DEP) is to thoroughly democratize economic decision making. Yet\, the technical nature of economic expertise intended to advocate for and support DEP could inadvertently lead to the rise of a new elite with outsized influence on economic decisions. Ellen D. Russell and Simon Tremblay-Pepin will discuss this problematic and possible counter-measures like capacities in institutional and subjective oversight. They will also go into why this might not be sufficient to avoid antidemocratic possibilities and propose reconsidering economic expertise as a way to alleviate this tension. \nThe event will be based on a recently published paper by Ellen and Simon. \nThis event will be in English. \nTo participate\, please register via this link.

SUMMARY:Talk by La Banda Vaga on the Necessity of a Planned Economy in the Climate Catastrophe
DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of a larger series of talks about democratic economic planning in times of the climate catastrophe\, hosted by the german council-communist-anarchist group La Banda Vaga in Freiburg\, Germany. They have previously published an article calling for an anti-authoritarian councilist planned economy. \nYou can find the other talks in this series via this link. We will also post them as events as their date approaches. \nThe description is taken from the event’s website and translated into english: \n“The climate crisis is omnipresent. However\, neither the state nor the market are in a position to counteract the climate catastrophe. On the contrary\, it is precisely their actions that are escalating the situation. In contrast\, in recent years voices have become louder calling for rational economic planning. In our lecture\, we want to present a critique of the market-based attempt to deal with the climate catastrophe and a sketch of a democratically planned economy that could actually do something to counter today’s challenges.” \nThe talk will be in German.

SUMMARY:INDEP online Talk with Matt Vidal on Lean Production\, Worker Control\, and Socialist Efficiency in the Age of Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Critics of lean production\, including many Marxists\, argue that it is a management system that was designed to deskill labour and intensify work. It is an inherently capitalist management system that should be resisted by workers and rejected by trade unions\, the implication being that it would have no place in a socialist economy\, and no role in socialist planning. \nAgainst this\, Vidal argues that the forces of production have a relative autonomy from capitalist relations of production and that lean production is a general management system compatible with worker empowerment\, strong unions\, and worker control. \nIn this talk\, he will argue that under socialism\, worker managed production and service organisations – within and beyond manufacturing – should adopt lean production methods. He will argue that socialists need to take efficiency seriously\, particularly in the age of climate crisis\, will distinguish between capitalist efficiency and socialist efficiency\, and will argue that lean production is necessary for achieving socialist efficiency in a burning world. He will offer some reflections on the role lean production can play in socialist planning. \n  \nThis event will take place in English. \nPlease register yourself here to participate.

SUMMARY:Attac Retrospective on conference "Paths towards Economic Democracy"
DESCRIPTION:Attac Munich holds a monthly open meeting event that gives space to discuss events and hapennings of the month. This one will focus on the Attac conference “Paths towards Economic Democracy”\, which was held on the 22nd of March in Munich. Guests included Alex Demirovic\, Sabine Nuss\, Aline Blankertz\, Christoph Sorg\, Emma Dowling and Michael W. Bader. \nHere is the translated description of the conference: \n“Due to the ecological and social crises of capitalism capitalism\, we urgently need a profound change in our economic system: We need to set the social framework\, not be dependent on private capital and profit-oriented investment decisions. Decide democratically on the criteria\, measure and goal of prosperity. Cooperate instead of competing to death. Use scarce goods fairly and ecologically sustainably\, setting priorities consciously and democratically\, planning for the common good\, produce and reproduce – frugally and mindfully instead of exploitative.  What can be left to a non-capitalist market and what not? And in what way could social planning work better today than in state-socialist times?” \n

SUMMARY:Workshop "Care Work\, Socialization and Planned Economies"
DESCRIPTION:(The description has been translated from German): \nWhile care work often receives little attention in economic contexts\, this has slowly changed as a result of feminist economic criticism. However\, it is still not a self-evident part of economic debates. Nevertheless\, current demands for socialization often regard care work as an important component of these demands. In the more recent planned economy debates\, however\, care work plays a subordinate role at best. At the same time\, the more recent work on “family abolitinism” provides a further starting point for discussing the role of care work for alternatives to capitalistically organized economies. In the workshop\, we want to relate these different strands to each other and find political starting points for a transformation of care work\, economy and society. \nWith Mirjam Müller\, Heiner Koch\, Christoph Sorg\, Barbara Fried und Livia von Samson \nThis event will take place in German \nRegistration is not necessary\, but helps with organizing the event: koch.heiner@gmail.com

SUMMARY:INDEP online talk with Walther Zeug - Democratic Economic Planning through Cybernetics & Holistic Accounting
DESCRIPTION:Amid the escalating social-ecological crisis\, which exposes the systemic shortcomings of our current economic models\, we must reconsider systemic alternatives such as democratic economic planning (DEP). In our model\, planning—understood as the long-term organizational anticipation of actions—operates on multiple levels: strategic central coordination\, scientific societal accounting\, and autonomous local coordination and production. We advocate for integrating advanced sustainability science\, cybernetics\, and life cycle sustainability assessment methods into a holistic modeling and accounting framework that unites economic\, ecological\, and social dimensions. This integrated approach presents a concrete\, solution-oriented model and tool for discussing an economic system capable of meeting societal needs within planetary boundaries—an innovative vision for the INDEP network’s dialogue on democratic economic futures. \nThis event will take place in English. \nTo participate\, please register through this link.

SUMMARY:ICEA course at the UNED "Democratic planning. Post-capitalist models in the era of the climate crisis"
DESCRIPTION:This course is taught by the ICEA (Instituto de Ciencias Econónimcas y de la Autogestión). \nCourse Summary \nThis course\, organized by UNED (National Distance Education University\, a public university in Spain specializing in online and distance education)\, takes a critical and multidisciplinary approach to contemporary socio-economic and ecological challenges\, exploring alternative models of economic planning and social organization. Over five sessions\, it covers topics such as the climate crisis\, democratic planning\, the contradictions of cooperatives from a Marxist perspective\, and libertarian viewpoints. \nThe first session (April 1) introduces the distinction between the climate crisis and the planetary crisis\, analyzing their global and socio-environmental dimensions with the participation of sociologist Damián Herrera Cuesta. The second session (April 4)\, led by economist Endika Alabort Amundarain\, explores democratic economic planning\, contrasting historical models with contemporary proposals adapted to ecological crises. \nThe third session (April 8) delves into five theoretical models of democratic economic planning\, highlighting contributions from authors such as Pat Devine\, Robin Hahnel\, and Takis Fotopoulos. These models examine how democracy\, social justice\, and sustainability can be integrated into economic systems\, considering scenarios such as the climate crisis and post-capitalism. \nIn the fourth session (April 25)\, Jon Las Heras Cuenca presents a Marxist critique of cooperatives\, focusing on the organizational paradoxes of the emblematic Mondragón group. The discussion explores how these structures\, despite their solidarity-based approach\, often reproduce capitalist dynamics such as market competition and labor alienation. \nFinally\, the fifth session (April 29)\, led by José Luis Carretero Miramar\, examines critical libertarian texts. The course concludes with reflections on emancipatory alternatives to systemic crises\, integrating ecological\, economic\, and political perspectives. \nIn summary\, the program combines critical theory\, case studies\, and contemporary debates to challenge hegemonic models and propose transformative solutions to global challenges. \nPlease note: \n\nThis course is conducted in Spanish.\nAll sessions will be in the CEST time slot (UTC+2)\n\nAttendance at this activity is possible with attendance in person or online\, live or recorded\, without the need to go to the centre. \n  \nRegistration. SUMMARY:INDEP online Talk - From Models to Modules: Rethinking Postcapitalist Political Economy - with Sophie Elias Pinsonnault and Simon Tremblay-Pepin
DESCRIPTION:Debates on democratic economic planning have hitherto revolved mainly around coherent\, abstract models. These all-in-one proposals compartmentalize discussions in technical jargon and hide the political and strategic debates that lie behind them. Sophie Elias Pinsonnault and Simon Tremblay-Pepin propose to bring the field to think about democratic planning through a modular approach. Conceiving post-capitalist proposals as assemblages of modules enables us to think about the plurality of possibilities and the different stages of transition. \nThis event will elaborate ideas first published in French in this article. \nThe event will be held in English. \nTo attend the event\, please register here. \n

SUMMARY:Prof. Robin Hahnel on a Participatory Economy - an alternative to capitalism
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Robin Hahnel is Professor Emeritus of economics at American University and has spent much of his career developing a “Participatory Economy” (also known as “Participatory Economics” or “Parecon”) as an alternative socioeconomic model to capitalism. The model of a Participatory Economy is based around democratic planning between federations of self-managing workers and consumers’ councils. In his talk\, Prof. Hahnel will introduce the concept and discuss its potential and the challenges it faces. \nHosted by the Cambridge Society for Economic Pluralism (CSEP)\, a student group set up post-2008 to explore heterodox approaches and interdisciplinary connections to economics. \nThis talk is available to watch online. SUMMARY:Workshop "Degrowth\, Planning\, Transformation"
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this is a closed event. \nIn the face of growing multiple crises\, especially the climate crisis\, it is becoming increasingly clear that the economies and societies of the Global North must not only be fundamentally restructured\, but in many areas deconstructed. \nThis implies not only overcoming capitalist structures and practices and a completely different model of prosperity\, but also comprehensive planning processes\, which are playing an increasingly important role in the degrowth debate. But many questions remain unanswered: The relationship between democracy and planning\, the governance of innovation and investment\, the coordination of production and consumption patterns\, the relationship between labor needs\, skills and individual freedom to choose one’s life path. \nThe workshop will take up current debates and go beyond them in exemplary ways. The aim is to specify important questions for policy practice and further research. \nThe workshop is a joint project of the DFG Research Group “Futures of Sustainability” at the University of Hamburg and THE NEW INSTITUTE. \nPreparation: Alex Demirović\, Kohei Saito und Ulich Brand \nThis event will be held in German. \n\n

SUMMARY:INDEP online Talk with Simon Hannah on his introductory Book on Ecosocialism and Democratic Economic Planning
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Simon Hannah will give an overview of his recently published book “Reclaiming the Future. A Beginner’s Guide to Planning the Economy”. The book aims to introduce a general audience to the ideas of and necessity for ecosocialism and democratic economic planning for combatting the unfolding climate catastrophe. We will also discuss the role of introductory books like it in the literature ecosystem on democratic economic planning\, which remains largely dominated by specialist academic research. What role do they play in popularizing these ideas among the wider public and the left? What challenges come with that and how can they be tackled effectively? \nPlease register for the event using the following link: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/bQt_JgiuTxqK8g18Dc-wrw \nThe event be held in English.

SUMMARY:Socializing Big Tech. A Mini-Workshop with Cecilia Rikap
DESCRIPTION:(Description copied from the event’s website here) \n\nTo register\, please sign up here \nModerated by Friederike Karla Hildebrandt from communia \nCo-organized with Christoph Sorg (HU Berlin) and Nils Rochowicz (TU Chemnitz). Part of „Socialization in Theory and Practice” Research Project led by Jacob Blumenfeld and Rabea Berfelde \n  \n\n\n\nTopic\nIn this workshop\, Cecilia Rikap will join us to discuss the problems and prospect of socializing big tech monopolies and reclaiming digital sovereignty. The goal is to both understand the monopoly power of big tech and learn how to fight against it. With big tech companies openly embracing reactionary politics in the USA and elsewhere\, a window of opportunity is opening to rethink digital futures beyond monopoly power. What does a democratic alternative to big tech look like\, and what steps can be made to build it? What role should the public sector play\, and which infrastructures are needed for this project? Is socialisation of the digital means of production possible? We will discuss these questions and others in a small and focused setting. For background\, please read the jointly authored report from December 2024: Reclaiming Digital Sovereignty. \n\n\nCecilia Rikap\nCecilia Rikap is the head of research of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose\, and Associate Professor at University College London (UCL). She is one of the leading critics of Big Tech and how these companies act as intellectual monopolies\, appropriating rents from ecosystems of research and development. Her recent book published with Routledge is Capitalism\, Power and Innovation: Intellectual Monopoly Capitalism Uncovered. She has also worked on corporate planning of global production and innovation systems\, and the relationship between tech giants and the state. Her new book with Verso will be forthcoming in November 2025. \n\nBackground reading can be found here.

SUMMARY:Overview of the Vanguard Method with John Seddon Online Event
DESCRIPTION:The Vanguard Method is a mangement and workplace design method for service organisations  to help them move away from a “command and control” to a systems approach. In democratic economic planning circles it’s being discussed (alongside with the Toyota Production System – see here\, here and here) as an important tool for worker’s control over their workplaces and economic planning. \nThis online event is free and will give an overview of the Vanguard Method by the creator of the method\, John Seddon. \nTo participate\, register here.

SUMMARY:INDEP online Workshop on Democratizing Investment
DESCRIPTION:Struggles over investment have long been struggles for control of our economies. Investment shapes the trajectory of social development: it determines which sectors grow or shrink\, influences regional development patterns\, and drives overall economic expansion or degrowth. In capitalist systems\, investment decisions are largely made in isolation by private company and bank management\, often in competition with and ignorance of each other. These decisions\, driven by profit expectations\, have far-reaching impacts on competitors\, suppliers\, and distributors\, yet remain privately controlled. This profit-centric approach leads to chronic underfunding in less profitable but socially crucial sectors such as care work\, sustainable technologies\, and public goods.
Building on last year’s process of imagining the Europe we want\, this year we will explore existing concepts of people’s democratic planning and the possibilities they open up for peace and justice. \nThe Future Factory explores the possibilities that people’s democratic planning opens for peace and justice. We translate these concepts into our contexts of struggle and spaces of exchange\, whether at the local community level or on a wider scale. Together\, we will create a language of resistance that articulates not only hope but strategic ways forward. \nFollowing our June 2023 festival and September 2024 gathering\, we will bring again together activists\, academics\, diverse Left\, progressive and anticapitalist activists and organisations to discuss\, plan and design peaceful and collaborative futures where war and exploitation will not only be unthinkable but impossible! Join us in workshops\, lectures\, plenaries and assemblies! \nPlease find below the programme. It will be continuously updated in the coming weeks. Come back and check for news! \nTo register send an email to: anastasiou@transform-network.net \n

SUMMARY:Towards a progressive agenda to democratise firms: Revisiting worker representation in company boards
DESCRIPTION:Event co-organised by the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)\, Economic Democracy Platform (PxDE) and CEHI University of Barcelona. \nAfter the Covid-19 pandemic and the Spanish presidency of the EU\, the importance of democratizing firms has returned to the political agenda in Spain. Worker representation on company boards or supervisory boards\, as one of its best known dimensions in Europe\, is still not legislated in Spain. Despite existing experiences in this regard\, they are largely unknown and underutilized. This issue was also debated in the Parliament of Catalonia after the 2008 financial crisis\, driven by the major trade unions. \nThis conference seeks to improve the understanding of codetermination and its social significance to make of this institution an active and normalized part of labour relations in Spain. Understanding the historical and current debates\, institutions\, perceptions over codetermination\, and its practices\, as well as its difficulties of success in the peripheral economies of the EU\, is key to assessing the prospects for developing worker participation on company boards as a dimension of a broader progressive agenda to democratize the economy. \nThe conference will begin with a panel presenting an ETUI collective and comparative book\, ‘Revisiting worker representation on boards: the forgotten EU countries in codetermination studies’\, which analyses the representation of workers on company boards in ten European countries little explored in codetermination studies\, including Spain. Then\, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) will provide its vision on a European agenda for democracy at work after the European elections of June 2024. A second panel will follow\, involving social partners and political representatives at the Spanish State and Catalonia level. It will discuss their positions and perspectives on concrete ways to develop and deepen worker participation in company boards and the democratization of firms from political and legislative action. In the afternoon\, concrete experiences of worker participation in company boards will be presented in a third panel\, including perspectives from trade unionists and company managers. Finally\, the day will close with a panel of academic papers to promote research and dialogue on board-level worker participation and the democratisation of firms in Spain. \nPlaces at the event are limited to a maximum of 90 participants on site. Participation online will also be possible. If you are interested and you did not register yet\, please contact Angélique\nVanhoutte: avanhoutte@etui.org or register for online participation here. \nFind the agenda in English here and in Spanish here. \nThe event will be held in English and Spanish and will have interpretation in these languages. \nWebsite of the event: https://www.etui.org/events/towards-progressive-agenda-democratise-firms \n  \n  \n  \n
