We advocate for integrating advanced sustainability science\, cybernetics\, and life cycle sustainability assessment methods into a holistic modeling and accounting framework that unites economic\, ecological\, and social dimensions. The discussion explores how these structures\, despite their solidarity-based approach\, often reproduce capitalist dynamics such as market competition and labor alienation. \nFinally\, the fifth session (April 29)\, led by José Luis Carretero Miramar\, examines critical libertarian texts. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Robin Hahnel is Professor Emeritus of economics at American University and has spent much of his career developing a “Participatory Economy” (also known as “Participatory Economics” or “Parecon”) as an alternative socioeconomic model to capitalism. The model of a Participatory Economy is based around democratic planning between federations of self-managing workers and consumers’ councils. DESCRIPTION:Please note that this is a closed event. \nIn the face of growing multiple crises\, especially the climate crisis\, it is becoming increasingly clear that the economies and societies of the Global North must not only be fundamentally restructured\, but in many areas deconstructed. \nThis implies not only overcoming capitalist structures and practices and a completely different model of prosperity\, but also comprehensive planning processes\, which are playing an increasingly important role in the degrowth debate. But many questions remain unanswered: The relationship between democracy and planning\, the governance of innovation and investment\, the coordination of production and consumption patterns\, the relationship between labor needs\, skills and individual freedom to choose one’s life path. \nThe workshop will take up current debates and go beyond them in exemplary ways. DESCRIPTION:Struggles over investment have long been struggles for control of our economies. Investment shapes the trajectory of social development: it determines which sectors grow or shrink\, influences regional development patterns\, and drives overall economic expansion or degrowth. SUMMARY:Towards a progressive agenda to democratise firms: Revisiting worker representation in company boards
DESCRIPTION:Event co-organised by the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI)\, Economic Democracy Platform (PxDE) and CEHI University of Barcelona. \nAfter the Covid-19 pandemic and the Spanish presidency of the EU\, the importance of democratizing firms has returned to the political agenda in Spain. Worker representation on company boards or supervisory boards\, as one of its best known dimensions in Europe\, is still not legislated in Spain. Despite existing experiences in this regard\, they are largely unknown and underutilized. This issue was also debated in the Parliament of Catalonia after the 2008 financial crisis\, driven by the major trade unions. \nThis conference seeks to improve the understanding of codetermination and its social significance to make of this institution an active and normalized part of labour relations in Spain. Understanding the historical and current debates\, institutions\, perceptions over codetermination\, and its practices\, as well as its difficulties of success in the peripheral economies of the EU\, is key to assessing the prospects for developing worker participation on company boards as a dimension of a broader progressive agenda to democratize the economy. \nThe conference will begin with a panel presenting an ETUI collective and comparative book\, ‘Revisiting worker representation on boards: the forgotten EU countries in codetermination studies’\, which analyses the representation of workers on company boards in ten European countries little explored in codetermination studies\, including Spain. Then\, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) will provide its vision on a European agenda for democracy at work after the European elections of June 2024. A second panel will follow\, involving social partners and political representatives at the Spanish State and Catalonia level. It will discuss their positions and perspectives on concrete ways to develop and deepen worker participation in company boards and the democratization of firms from political and legislative action. In the afternoon\, concrete experiences of worker participation in company boards will be presented in a third panel\, including perspectives from trade unionists and company managers. Finally\, the day will close with a panel of academic papers to promote research and dialogue on board-level worker participation and the democratisation of firms in Spain. \nPlaces at the event are limited to a maximum of 90 participants on site. DESCRIPTION:This two-day expert workshop titled “Democratic Economic Planning in Times of Planetary Crises“\, brings together leading scholars to explore democratic economic planning as a response to planetary crises. The event will feature discussions on ecological planning\, alternative economic coordination\, directed technological change and societal design. \nThe event is co-organised by the Institute for Spatial and Socio-Ecological Transformations (ISSET) at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien)\, the International Karl Polanyi Society (IKPS)\, the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE)\, the Arbeiterkammer Wien (AK Wien) and the Kompetenzzentrum Alltagsökonomie Vienna. \nThe workshop includes three open-access events:  \n– Friday\, 29th November\, 6-7:30pm (CET) | Public Lecture by Cédric Durand (University of Geneva) on “Ecological Planning And the Problem of Knowledge in the Anthropocene“ \nAbstract: Cédric Durand discusses the evolving role of economic planning in addressing today’s social-ecological challenges. He will present his and Keycheyan’s innovative model for economic planning which reimagines past and current social devices and institutions to foster democratic control over investment and align economic planning with planetary boundaries. In this way\, Durand offers a bold and fresh vision of democratic economic planning for addressing the pressing social and environmental challenges of our time. \n– Saturday\, 30th November\, 9-10:30 am (CET) | Public Lecture by Attila Melegh (University of Budapest) on “Non-capitalist Mixed Economies: A Polanyian Approach“ \nAbstract: In his talk\, Attila Melegh aims to reinterpret and analyse historical and current non-capitalist or dual/mixed capitalist models as potential solutions to the systemic crisis of capitalism. Drawing inspiration from Karl Polanyi and other critical traditions\, Melegh will explore how various forms of markets have combined redistributive\, reciprocity\, and householding relations to create economies capable of producing broad-based prosperity and stability. SUMMARY:Transition in Work: Dynamics of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Cuba
DESCRIPTION:International conference from 14th to 15th November at the TU Dresden\, Institute of Sociology.\nThis conference will focus on Cuba as a laboratory of social change. In particular\, work and labour\, cultural and gender-specific processes of the current crisis are under scrutiny. The small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) created in the course of state reforms play a decisive role in Cuba’s social and economic transformation. They touch on essential aspects of the way of life\, individuals’relationship with the Cuban state and the revolution\, and also on fundamental questions of alternative social concepts\, including climate change\, combating hunger\, access to education and health systems and gender equality. \nFrom a comparative perspective\, the sociality of the labour process and the experience of work\, including forms of ownership\, are of particular importance. What are the possibilities and limits of collective forms of work organisation? What experiences\, contradictions and challenges arise in private companies within state socialist economies? And in comparison\, in co-operative enterprises in capitalist economies? \nBased on these questions\, the conference aims at promoting an in-depth understanding of these transformations and their impact on the work and lives of people in Cuba. We hope to develop new perspectives on the emerging social and ecological transformation processes worldwide through exchange and comparative analyses. The focus lays on subjects’ experiences and processes of social change and how individual agency and state policy and planning relate to each other. \nPresentations and discussion take place in English and Spanish with translations. The conference language is English.
