University of Melbourne (Informal Urbanism Research Hub)

Anitra Nelson

I’m an activist-scholar affiliated with the Informal Urbanism Research Hub (InfUr-) at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Most of my academic activities coincide with political and philosophical interests, indeed passions, focussing on autonomist postcapitalism, and exploring a community mode of production on the basis of a nonmonetary economy.

Co-editor of the collection Post-Carbon Inclusion (2024, Bristol University Press), my Beyond Money, A Postcapitalist Strategy (2022) followed the associated Life Without Money: Building Fair and Sustainable Economies (2011), a nonmarket socialist collection co-edited with the late Frans Timmerman, both published by Pluto Press (London).

I co-authored Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide (2020) with Vincent Liegey which shows horizontalism in practice in a movement. I co-edited Food for Degrowth: Perspectives and Practices with Ferne Edwards (2021/2022) and Housing for Degrowth: Principles, Models, Challenges and Opportunities (2018). Both came out in the Routledge Environmental Humanities series. Also in 2018, Pluto Press issued my book on eco-collaborative housing Small is Necessary: Shared Living on a Shared Planet.
