Carla Coburger

My name is Carla Coburger and I am a monetary economist and PhD candidate at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, where I am part of the “Economic and Monetary Sovereignty in West Africa” research project within the AfricaMultiple Cluster of Excellence. My research focuses on the evolution of money and the dynamics of monetary orders — from the historical development of monetary systems to contemporary debates around central bank digital currencies and distributed ledger technologies as well as democratising money. I am particularly interested in how global monetary transitions affect sovereignty, hierarchy, and power.

I am a member of the EReNSEP writing collective and co-authored the book ‘The State of Capitalism’ (Verso, 2023) as well as papers that appeared in the Journal of Law and Political Economy and the Journal of Risk and Financial Management.
