In this article for the Marxist journal Science and Society, David Laibman, the journal’s editor, reviews the book Creative Construction: Democratic Planning in the 21st Century and Beyond. In this article, Laibman first summarises some of the book’s contents in order to entice people to read the book. Then, Laibman critically assesses some of the arguments of the contributors, with Laibman in particular criticising nearly all of the contributors for staying clear of the details of the democratic economic planning models surveyed in the book’s first chapter, for having a utopian impulse that avoids beginning with things and people as they are and lacking a solid foundation in political economy.
