“A Political Economy of Socialism” – Article by the IDA on the Planning Debate and Labour Time Calculation

In the 215th issue of the German journal PROKLA (Journal for Critical Social Science) political principles and technical issues of economic planning, were discussed both thoroughly. The IDA previously also reviewed this issue.

However, approaches to labour time calculation, as developed in particular by the Group of International Communists (GIK) in 1930, were largely ignored. A theory of a decentralized and labour-time-based planned economy based on self-managed enterprises could elucidate the various problems of democratic planning and simultaneously generate fundamental characteristics of a socialist political economy.
