Article By Olessia Kirtchik On Algorithmic Prediction And Economic Planning

On the website AOC, Olessia Kirtchik, a sociologist at the Internet and Society Centre (CIS) of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), has published an article that critically analyses the rise of forms of algorithmic prediction that utilise artificial intelligence and discusses their implications for economic planning.

A summary of the article can be found below:

Through its predictive power, AI transforms economics into behavioral science – both a tool for knowledge of behaviors and a lever for action on them. But could a model drawn on market data prior to 2008 have predicted the crisis? AI does not “predict” the future, it projects from historical data and does not seek the underlying mechanisms. Not being able to anticipate, is it innovation?
