At this year’s Summer University of the European Left the topic of Democratic Economic Planning has been discussed on multiple occasions. The Summer University took place from the 11th to the 14th July in Mieres (Spain) at the Polytechnic School of Mieres – University of Oviedo.
There was a dedicated workshop on the topic titled “They want Private Monopolies, we demand People’s Planning”, moderated by Roland Kulke of transform!europe. Introductory remarks were given by Walter Baier, President of the European Left Party. Additional speakers were Martin Günther of Die Linke (Germany), Nadia Garbellini of Fondazione Claudio Sabattini (Italy) and Juan Ponte, author of “Capitalism does not exist” and General Director of Agenda 2030 in the Government of Asturias (Spain)
During a plenary session titled “A Green and Just Transition: Lessons from the Ex-Coal Regions and the Global South”, Sira Rego, Minister of Youth and Children of the Government of Spain called explicitly for a “planned transition” in contrast to the “just transition” framing that is mostly used. This session was also moderated by Roland Kulke and other panelists included José Manuel García Zapico, Secretary General of Comisiones Obreras Asturias (Spain) and Malgorzata Kulbaczewska from Cross-Border Talks and Fundacja Naprzód (Poland).
