An essay by Rabea Berfelde on the necessity of democratic economic planning has been published on the website of the Otto-Brenner Foundation, the scientific foundation of the german industrial union IG Metall. The essay is based on a talk she gave at the “Mehr” Festival of the Otto-Brenner Foundation earlier this year. Below you can find a translated excerpt of the essay:
“This brings me to my conclusion: Reflecting on democratic economic planning certainly runs counter to the spirit of the times in many ways. Nor do the current political power dynamics necessarily suggest that it will be implemented anytime soon. And yet, the intertwining of the climate crisis and the rise of fascism suggests that we should work precisely on these visions for a fundamentally different way of life in order to break through the barriers to transformation.”
