New Book on Postcapitalist Worlds

Jérôme Baschet and Laurent Jeanpierre have edited a collection of works by 80 authors in French, entitled Monde postcapitalistes (Postcapitalist Worlds), published by La Découverte. The book is massive, just over 900 pages, and is organized into twelve sections divided into many short entries. Some entries will have high interest for people working on democratic economic planning: Economy, State/stateless societies, Money/postmoney, Division of labor/unspecialization, Common, Co-ops, Scale.

Here is a translated excerpt of the summary proposed by the editor:

It is time to reopen the future and disprove the adage that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.

This book acknowledges the catastrophic failure of the so-called “communist” projects of the 20th century as well as the threats to the Earth’s habitability and the survival of species. In doing so, it seeks to go beyond a critique of capitalism that has remained impotent and often detached from ecological issues. It thus broadens our understanding of capitalism far beyond economic issues, which have significantly limited analysis and debate. Moving beyond capitalism cannot be conceived without redefining our ways of living, coexisting, connecting with other living beings, and giving meaning to our lives.
By addressing post-capitalist dreams and psyches, materials and technologies, death and religions, conflicts and war as well as festivals and rituals, education and the organizational levels of social life, love and the arts, and family, gender, and currency, this book helps shape not a program, much less a doctrine, but a plurality of images and paths that can contribute to building a freer and more fulfilling society, one that is more respectful of the planet.
