“The debate on democratic economic planning is experiencing a resurgence internationally. With the German-language publication of the anthology “Creative Construction – Democratic Planning in the 21st Century”, edited by Jan Groos and Christoph Sorg, a comprehensive overview of key approaches in the planning debate is now available in German for the first time. This presentation outlines the current state of the debate and discusses open questions.

Jan Groos is a researcher, filmmaker, and podcaster. He is the director of the Medialab at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Salzburg. His research focuses on democratic shaping of the future, critical media practice, and public knowledge production. Jan hosts the podcast “Future Histories” as part of his research practice.

Christoph Sorg is an Einstein Independent Researcher at Humboldt University in Berlin and works at the intersection of sociology and political economy. He researches the history, present, and possible futures of planning and is the author of “Social Movements and the Politics of Debt” (Amsterdam University Press, 2022) as well as numerous articles in journals such as “Competition & Change”, “New Political Economy”, and “Critical Sociology”.
