Jason Hickel promotes democratizing the economy in the Spanish Parliament

Jason Hickel in a recent address at the Beyond Growth Conference in the Spanish Parliament discusses economic politics in the polycrisis, highlighting the fundamentally undemocratic nature of capitalist production and distribution. Hickel refers to the imbalance of an over-production of unnecessary products and a chronic underproduction of necessary goods such as clean energy, affordable housing or sustainable agriculture. Concluding his speech Hickel demands two key policies for a democratically planned post-growth economy: (I) a public finance mechanism with public works that allow organizing productive capacities to meet social and ecological goals and (II) a credit guidance mechanism to impose rules on commercial banks to decrease investments in sectors like fossil energy and increase investments in sustainable and socially beneficial sectors.
