“Kurswechsel” Journal Issue on Democratic Economic Planning and Transformation

“Kurswechsel” is the journal of the Advisory Council for Social, Economic, and Environmental Policy Alternatives (BEIGEWUM). It has been published since 1986 and features quarterly scholarly articles on a specific focus topic.

Let’s Plan! Democratic Economic Planning—The Key to Transformation?
Corporations like OMV, Spar, and Amazon are constantly planning—to maximize their profits. Owners and management decide what and how to produce; the workforce has no say. This fuels dissatisfaction, inequality, and the climate crisis. Why do we leave this planning to a few corporations—instead of shaping it democratically to meet our needs? We ask ourselves the same question. That’s why, in the new issue of the magazine Kurswechsel, we use the examples of financial markets, the care sector, energy, and the automotive industry to show how democratic economic planning could work to meet the needs of the many rather than serving the interests of the wealthy and corporations.

Topics covered include: the democratization of the banking sector, a care-based economic model, the energy sector, and the crisis in the automotive industry. In addition, the issue examines historical experiences with economic planning in Austria during the 20th century and explores how social and ecological planning can be integrated today.
